Whether it’s a large corporate event, wedding or barbecue Catering Unlimited provides exceptional foods & service. Great events take great commitment and that’s where owner & founder Susie MacDonell comes in. Susie’s lifelong passion for food and entertaining has been the foundation of this successful business since 1992. In 2004 Catering Unlimited moved from Halifax to East Hants and currently employs up to 30 staff at a time. From its kitchen headquarters in Elmsdale, Catering Unlimited provides catering to all parts of NS. Susie’s hard work, organizational skills and commitment extend to her community non-profit groups as well. Susie is a strong supporter of local businesses and strives to ‘Buy Local’.”  And, she says, “I am blessed with great staff.”

Car buffs and novices alike motor to Carquest in Elmsdale for their auto parts. Owner Keith Sullivan started the business almost 25 years ago from cramped beginnings in Nine Mile River. Since then it has grown to the present spacious well-stocked location in Elmsdale, where his daughter Nicole has joined the family business. The Sullivan family and staff greet customers with knowledge, smiles – and of course the needed parts. They also provide a local delivery service, and the Carquest delivery vehicle is a familiar sight on the roads of East Hants. Carquest helps keep East Hants on the go.


Finalist: Business of the Year Category

Creativity and quality roll out the door at Curtis Customs, where the mission is to provide high quality custom work & service to fit the client’s dreams. Located in the Elmsdale business park, Curtis Customs specializes in classic car restoration, creating street rods & custom builds. The business also offers in-house custom paint & airbrush services, detailing, interiors, design & fabrication. Unique products range from the Ultimate Tool Box – which must be seen to be believed – to the Curtis Custom Wrench Bench, an actual work bench shaped like a wrench. Accordingto Curtis, “We don’t just make garage gear, we make garage gear cool!”




Business Person of the Year 2014

Parker’s Service Station is a landmark in Middle Musquodoboit, and most days you will be greeted there by Tom Parker himself. For the past 35 years Tom has been going to work six or seven days a week, up to 15 hours a day. If you talk to his customers, you might hear about how Tom treats his customers with honesty and fairness. Tom has also given much time and energy to many community organizations. Many people got their first job with Tom, who teaches business basics such as making change and shows how important happy customers are to a successful business.

Dr. Kim McCarthy doesn’t allow bumps in the road to impact her success; she finishes each day with a smile knowing she has made an impact in her patients’ lives and her business is more successful than the day before. Kim’s innovative approach in audiology makes her a leader in her field. She makes business decisions with vision toward the future impact on the field of audiology, her patients and her business’ success. Kim handles every aspect of her business: accounting, marketing, hiring and training, all while giving her patients superior service. She is committed to community involvement and to professional improvement for herself, her employees and her profession.

Maitland`s gorgeous shore is home to Cresthaven By the Sea B&B, where Warren Yuill takes great pride in giving guests an amazing Nova Scotia experience. He is an engaging host at the bed and breakfast, and a true ambassador for the Hants Shore. Warren promotes local businesses and ensures his guests know all about the area`s wondrous features and activities. As a strong leader Warren thinks ‘outside the box’ with an inclusive, generous approach that people enjoy. He has worked tirelessly on many business and community projects such as the Fundy Tidal Interpretive Centre with a vision of the Hants Shore as a major tourist attraction.




Community Booster of the Year 2014

“Win/win/win” is the result of the Care-Actors’ unique and fun way to fundraise. These talented and hard-working volunteers write, practice and perform an original production that provides an evening of endless laughs and, when everything is over, money for local non-profit organizations. Each performance is combined with a dinner, served by the actors, to create a dinner theater. The group works throughout the year writing the play, building the props and creating the costumes. Proceeds go to non-profit groups, and the hard work and dedication of the entire crew has raised over $100,000 for dozens of organizations.


Finalist: Community Booster Category

Burntcoat Head Park attracts visitors from all over to witness the highest recorded tides in the world. Locals also love the park, often bringing guests and sharing stories of how the lighthouse and tides are woven into their family memories. The Park Association works tirelessly to ensure visitors come away with a sense of wonder and a desire to return. The association also encourages visitors to explore the area. Staff share information about local activities, shops and restaurants, and the lighthouse showcases local craftspeople by selling products such as honey, pottery, books, candles and furniture. Now that’s local success on a world class scale.

Alphabet Soup, Mommy2B, Tumblebugs, How to Talk So Your Kids Will Listen, Thursdays in the Park, Family Time and Baby Time – these are only some of the wonderful EHFRC programs. The EHFRC’s primary mission is to serve the East Hants area offering family based programs to benefit and support families in our area, helping new parents, single parents, grandparents and growing families. The folks at EHFRC are dedicated to nurturing and supporting healthy family life through quality child and family development programs. Cathy MacDonald and her team are a great asset to the communities of East Hants and area.




Customer Service Award (Individual) 2014

At Ettinger’s Home Hardware in Shubenacadie Bruce Harvey always greets you with a warm welcome, whether he is cutting keys or pricing a large project. Bruce finds his job ­­­interesting because no two days are alike, and that’s saying something, since Bruce has a total of 36 years’ experience at Home Hardware stores. Bruce’s enthusiasm and humour never desert him, and on a very busy day you’ll hear him say “Gotta love it!” If you are unsure what you need for your project, just ask Bruce; he has experience in everything from plumbing parts to building houses.

When you walk in the door at Enfield Pharmachoice, pharmacist Bill Ingarfield makes sure that even if you aren’t feeling great you get great service. Many customers comment that as their neighbourhood pharmacist, Bill is an integral part of their healthcare management. They find him to be thorough and friendly, with a genuine interest in his customers. In today`s busy world with information overload, customers count on a familiar and trusted person for professional service and wellness advice. Bill understands that from the very young to the well-aged, your quality of life depends on your quality of health.

Any morning looks brighter after a cheery greeting from Sheila Wentworth at Robin’s Donuts in Enfield. Regular customers look forward to Sheila’s positive attitude and contagious smile, knowing it will start their day right every time. Sheila remembers her customers and makes them feel valued. She even recognizes her regular customers just from their voices and she remembers how they take their coffee. In her eight years at Robin’s, Sheila has mentored many young people on their first job, teaching them about – you guessed it – great customer service.




Outstanding Customer Service (Team) Award 2014

A funeral is an important opportunity to pay tribute to someone you loved. It is a time for relatives and friends to gather, tell stories, share memories, acknowledge their loss and support one another. The staff at Ettinger Funeral Home are there to make that time as easy as possible for you.  In their knowledgeable way, they make you feel like you are in good hands the moment they answer your phone call. From helping you make the arrangements to making sure that everything goes as planned the day of the service, Ettinger’s staff are discreetly by your side.

Expansion and growth have brought many changes since McNeill’s opened its doors in 1962, and 2004 brought the addition of the convenience store. Like the rest of the business, it’s the people who are the heart of the place and many customers comment on the great service of Tammy, Sheila and Cecile, who make up the fulltime day staff. In the newly designed convenience store, these reliable and good-natured people serve up fresh breakfast sandwiches, home-made banana bread and muffins, and daily-made sandwiches and subs. Friendly warm smiles and delicious muffins and coffee help many customers start their day right.

The family-owned and operated business of Withrow’s Farm Market & Rocky Knoll Farm Meat Shop in Belnan is a big part of life for many families in East Hants. The staff are there to help you with whatever you need – a Halloween pumpkin, a Thanksgiving turkey, meat to barbecue on a hot summer’s day or ice cream to cool off with. At the butcher shop, you can get that special cut of meat for a new (or old) recipe. And you can always get advice about which of the dozen or so magnificent types of apples they stock in the fall are best for apple pies.




Rising Star Award 2014

A keen eye for opportunities and the ability to work around clients busy schedules have led to tremendous growth in five years at Macs Onsite Oil Change since Adam MacDonald implemented his unique business idea: complete oil and filter change services while you shop. Leave your keys with the technician and they take care of the rest. The popularity of the service has allowed Adam to expand his services from the Mic Mac Mall into Burnside and add windshield rock chip repair. Always looking at ways to grow and improve his business, Adam is committed to providing exceptional customer service.


Finalist: Rising Star Category

Lisa Clancy has been keeping East Hants ‘in check’ for four years now. Any business person knows that managing and growing a business requires accurate and timely financial data. Many local businesses say that the services at Integrity Cheques and Balances Inc. have been invaluable in their own business success. Clients find Lisa knowledgeable and reliable, saying that she helpfully answers questions in everyday language and ensures her clients understand the numbers and process. She also provides her service at the client’s convenience, whether at their home or business.


Finalist: Rising Star Category

Owners Caroline Gregg and Rob Woods can give you 22 reasons to own alpacas; they did their homework before starting Rocaro Alpacas. Within a few years their hard work and passion have built an award winning breeding program that reflects their commitment to raising the profile of alpacas and developing and expanding the fibre industry. Alpaca wool is valued for its softness, lustre, exceptional warmth, strength and range of natural colours. With 35 alpacas in their current herd, Rocaro Alpacas offers alpacas for sale in addition to wool products such as socks, scarves, wall art, rugs, duvets and of course alpaca yarn.




Tom Parker Chamber Member of the Year 2014

Sharon’s quiet leadership and positive support along with her countless hours of hard work and dedication have been fundamental to the Chamber`s success and growth over the past several years. Sharon understands the importance of being a part of the local business community and is quick to lend a hand to see it succeed. Her fun-loving and unassuming style makes Sharon a valuable and productive member of any team. That same work ethic and commitment extends over to her work as regional manager at Mariposa Reading Achievement Centre Limited (now Foundations for Learning), where under her guidance many students have discovered that ‘reading is succeeding’.


Finalist: Tom Parker Chamber Member Category

Dedicated teachers and welcoming classrooms are an important part of adult education, but EHCLA doesn’t stop there. When EHCLA saw that transportation was a barrier to adult learning, this community-focused organization set up Community Rider. Now Community Rider transports not just adult learners but many East Hants residents to reach appointments, run errands, get to preschool and participate in community events. Community Rider is also part of the rural transit network. EHCLA & EHCR are dedicated to enabling everyone to be fully engaged and included in our communities, and a few years ago served as an umbrella to assist in setting up the East Hants Family Resource Centre.




Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2014

Jessica Edgar has innovative ideas and a strong focus on the betterment of our community. She put those ideas and commitment to work when she identified a business opportunity after her son was born. At Branching Out Natural Parenting & Living in Enfield, Jessica sets the same standards for her clients as for her family, with quality products that are local, sustainable, toxin-free and ethically manufactured. Quick to see new opportunities while maintaining her vision and commitment to well-being, Jessica offers an online store, a gift registry and a customer loyalty program along with a play group and complementary products for a broader market.


Finalist: Young Entrepreneur Category

One key to Whitney Burgess’ business success is her understanding that in addition to looking good and feeling good, people really want to feel good about themselves. Whitney’s hard work and dedication have created a comfortable atmosphere where her clients can unwind and relax. On any given day, you can walk into Whitney’s Shear Design and find people sharing a laugh while Whitney takes excellent care of them. Only 26, she has opened her own salon in her home community of Kennetcook and attracts clients from all over East Hants with her professional and innovative hair design.


Finalist: Young Entrepreneur Category

Natural, inspiring, happy, creative and timeless describe Terri-Lynn Warren Photography’s style. Terri-Lynn is a young entrepreneur providing professional quality photography specializing in family, wedding, graduation, and business. Terri-Lynn’s gifts extend in front of and behind the camera. Her warm personality puts you at ease and her photographic talent exceeds expectations. In 2011 while attending university she launched her professional business “Terri-Lynn Warren Photography” which thrived each year into a fulltime passion. Terri-Lynn’s home-studio is located in her hometown of Enfield. She also serves on-location clients in East Hants, HRM and beyond. Terri-Lynn captures special moments, making them last forever.
