Christmas Social - Once again East Hants & Districts Chamber of Commerce celebrated the holiday season with our annual Christmas Reception, Tuesday December 14th at Bitar's Banquet Room in Elmsdale.

Bitar's kitchen and wait staff manned the cash bar and kept a steady stream of hot and cold hors d'oeuvres circulating to tempt members and guests into a little holiday indulgence; tender lamb kabobs, roast beef crustini, jumbo shrimp, mini brushetta rounds and even lobster stuffed mushroom caps.  The private venue was cozy and intimate, encouraging networking and holiday socializing among attendees.

Never forgetting our less fortunate neighbours in need, our annual food bank collection box for Caring & Sharing was stuffed to overflowing this year by our generous members and guests; thanks to all who contributed.

Thanks as well to new member Jymline Glass in the Elmsdale Business Park, for their donation of enough nicely etched 'holiday' glasses to provide gifts for every member!

President Rick Ramsay welcomed attendees & wished all a happy season & New Year. The venue, new to Chamber this year, allowed for traditional seating at candle-lit tables... or comfy couches for 'conversation pit' catch-ups and lots of space for mingling...
Plenty of socializing and great food kept the conversational 'buzz' at a high level...

February 12th - Tourism Symposium Reception

Tourism Tomorrow was the theme of the Municipality's second annual full day symposium & reception, hosted this year at the Milford Recreation Centre.  The new venue provided space for multi-track programming and a larger crowd of representatives from many county tourism industry businesses and groups.  A good number of Chamber business were represented at the Symposium and several of our Board members attended.

Attendees enjoyed presentations by industry players and several intensive brainstorming sessions by working groups.  Round robin presentations were made by each group identifying current tourism strengths and challenges within East Hants, as well as future goals and dreams.  Frequent recognition was made of the many entrepreneurs and groups who are already so active in the industry.

The intensive symposium culminated in an evening reception, sponsored by the Chamber, where the networking and brainstorming continued at a more leisurely pace, accompanied by a selection of hot and cold hors'doeurves by Chamber member Catering Unlimited.

Lunch & Learn - Wednesday, January 27, 12 noon to 1 pm, at Shooter's Restaurant

Topic: Diffusing Hostilities - Constable Les Kakonyi, Community Policing Coordinator with the Enfield Detachment of RCMP spoke how to handle potentially violent confrontations and irate customers.

Constable Kakoni, Community Policing Coodinator/Media Relations

- RCMP Enfield Detachment

Les Kakoni has 30 years of service with the RCMP, all in Nova Scotia and predominately on the South Shore and in the Annapolis Valley.  In 1996 he was involved in a shoot-out with a suspect who had already shot and killed an officer near Lunenburg.  Although the suspect was shot three times, he eventually killed himself.  Les, along with two other officers at the scene, were awarded the Commissioner's Commendation for bravery.

Cst. Kakonyi is a former incident commander with Ground Search & Rescue and also a former member of the Nova Scotia RCMP Tactical (riot) Troop deployed to the G7 in Alberta, as well as the Quebec G8 and Francophone Summit in 1998.  With the Enfield detachment of the RCMP since March 2009, he is currently the police liaison to the community and is responsible for media relations.

A larger than average crowd filled our space at Shooters, who did their usual great job providing a tasty lunch and fast service at a good price.  Constable Kakonyi presented his slide show along with handouts and took questions from the floor afterward, giving attendees a chance to discuss situations they had found themselves in at work.
