2008 in Review

~ Christmas at Curly's 2008 ~

Wednesday Dec 17, 2008

Truly nasty winter weather that affected most of the province could not keep the very boldest away as EHDCC held it's annual Christmas Social at Curly Portables in in Enfield.  A warm gathering of members and guests mixed and mingled while enjoying hot munchies against the cold outside.

Chamber President Steve Pottie spoke briefly, commending the turnout on their dedication and holiday spirit, and also introduced the Chamber's new Office Manager, Tanya Eisnor-Whynot.

2008 was the second year for a fairly new offering, a wine tasting arranged by Portables owner Jim Isenor.

Assistant Manager Brandon Horne once again did a great job informing and delighting the crowd with input for both the mind and palate.

A variety of visual aids were provided as handouts for members to take home, including a 'mouth chart', along with detailed background on the fine nuances of discriminating wine tasting.

Two different red wines were extensively sampled and extensively discussed, with more than a few instant fans made, Little Black Dress and Yellow Tail.

The weather outside may have been frightful, but inside the light was mellow, the food was hot & tasty, and the atmosphere welcoming.

Thanks to all those who came out to share the seasonal spirit and for your food bank donations as well - we'll see you in the New Year!

Party goers enjoyed the usual mixing and networking but the wine tasting had no problem commanding their attention!

Entrepreneur of the Year - Noble Music Studios, Enfield

Bruce Noble grew up in Moncton, New Brunswick and started playing guitar at age 10. He played in bands all through junior high and high school. While juggling his schoolwork, he also toured extensively throughout Atlantic Canada. After graduation Bruce joined up with a musical act from London, England and toured Canada. He played with popular progressive rock bands Junction and Aquafuge throughout Atlantic Canada.

Eventually Bruce moved to Los Angeles, California in 1979 to attend Hollywood's famous music school, Musician's Institute, GIT. While in LA, he studied and played with world renowned rock and jazz greats. During his Hollywood years, he performed and recorded with several artists and bands at clubs such as The Troubadour and The Whiskey-A-Go-Go. A special experience at that time was an appearance in a scene in the "Blues Brothers" movie with Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi!

After graduation from MI, specializing in Guitar Performance, Composition and Education he returned to Canada for a tour with Canadian legends Mashmakan. Having built up his skills and experience in the United States, Bruce then moved back to Halifax, settling in to a busy teaching and performing schedule. Additionally, Bruce has made several trips to England where he has played and recorded with many different artists. He joined the Canadian Conservatory of Music almost at its inception, and was senior advisor of the Guitar Faculty for many years. He was also instrumental in the development of the pop and jazz curriculum for guitar, bass and drums.
After 20 years with the Conservatory he felt it was time to set up his own teaching and recording studio which had been a life long dream, the result of which can be seen at Noble Music Studios in Enfield, Nova Scotia. "It's really amazing how far technology has progressed during my career", says Bruce, "today we can produce quality cds right here in our own home studio using equipment which is many times more compact and efficient than what was considered state of the art just a few years ago!"

Bruce works closely with Q104 and HAL Radio and recently completed the Q104 Guitar God Promotion featuring Dean Guitars, Beavercreek & Roland Boss which garnered much support across Nova Scotia. In 2007, Bruce completed Trump University’s Entrepreneurship Mastery Program, and the subsequent growth of the Studios has been acknowledged online by Trump University in a Press Release from New York in January of 2008.

Business of the Year - Elmsdale Landscaping, Elmsdale

In the beginning, Dennis Coupar Landscaping, started production of Nursery sod in Elmsdale, Nova Scotia in 1954. In March 1970, Elmsdale Landscaping Limited was formed with a commitment to superior Nursery Sod production. Today we maintain over 1,900 acres in production and we have the facilities to harvest more than one million square yards annually. With our large fleet of trucks we can deliver our Kentucky Bluegrass Nursery sod, cut fresh daily on fifty square yard pallets throughout Atlantic Canada. With our many years of experience in turf management, Elmsdale Landscaping Limited is the sod supplier trusted by governments, landscape contractors, city parks, grounds superintendents and homeowners.

We have three other divisions in our business:

  • Construction Division – Our construction division uses more of our products than any other part of our other divisions. We have completed projects like Costco Wholesale, Kent Building Supplies, HRM – Sports fields, P-3 Schools, Municipality Sidewalks – Landscaping plus many others.

  • Topsoil Division – With our fleet of trucks we supply & deliver manufactured soils and bark mulch all over the province to many different contractors.

  • Hydroseeding Division – With our Hydroseeding Units and tandem trucks we supply DOT, HRM and other Municipalities a faster way to seed their landscape areas. The mulch in the hydro seed mixture helps maintain the moisture level of the seed and seedlings. The slurry often has other ingredients including fertilizer, tackifying agents, green dye and other additives.

The company has approximately 110 employees and has in excess of 170 pieces of equipment for its daily operations. We have recently opened the “Old Marine Propeller” building as our warehouse and storage facility and we have purchased the formerly “Old Shaw Building – Elm Truck Center” now named Elmsdale Service Center Limited which sells Diesel Fuel to a data base of clients and repairs inside and outside vehicles.

We are sponsors and supporters of many different charities in the corridor area. One of our proud charities is the Caring & Sharing - Children’s Christmas Toy-Drive. We collect Toys from our vendors, clients and employees for the children in the area beginning in September and end our endeavor in Enfield by collecting Toys along the route in the annual Christmas Parade.

Company Owner: George Coupar, President

We are proud supporters of the East Hants Chamber of Commerce, Landscape Nova Scotia, Construction Association of Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Construction Safety Association, Canadian Nursery Trades Association, BBB of Nova Scotia and the American Sod Producers Association.

Tom Parker Award - Caldwell Roach Insurance, Elmsdale

Caldwell Roach Insurance was founded in Truro in 1965 by Ron Roach and Ken Caldwell. In 1971 they expanded into Shubenacadie. The business continued to grow along with the communities they served and in 1991 expanded again into Enfield. 2002 saw a relocation of the East Hants business into the present location in Elmsdale and the addition of BPA insurance which was owned by Lee Hennigar. Although Ken retired in 1991 and Ron in 1999, their philosophy of hard work and loyalty to their clients remained.

In the ever changing world of insurance and financial services, the key to their success is their independence. Being able to offer the products that meet the needs of their clients, not a parent company, is what enables them to grow in a very competitive market place. Caldwell-Roach provides coverage to their clients from over 7 of the largest insurance companies in Canada and many other specialty insurers.

What Caldwell-Roach Insurance is most proud of are their people. Each of them not only maintains a strong relationship with their clients but they also make the effort to give back to the community. Whether they are giving out hot chocolate at the Christmas parade, serving lunch to seniors, raising money for the relay for life or supporting the many charitable organizations around the community, all of the staff take an active role in giving back to the community that supports them.
